In this month's New Agriculturist . . .

99/5

You may feel that there is too much looking back, and looking forward, as we approach the end of the millennium. New Agriculturist will remain firmly in the present, bringing you news of what's happening now and of developments that are on line to bring benefits to those who work in the agricultural sector.

To look back is, however, tempting. Farming has, of course, been mankind's key to survival for many more than two millennia. In Focus on this month, we highlight food legumes, the beans and peas which form the staple for many millions of people and which were probably first domesticated from the wild some seven millennia ago. And from crops to the land on which they are grown - can a system, that has been part of the farming scene since farming began, continue? We have some Points of view on the future for shifting cultivation. As the world continues to fill with people - surely the most significant challenge for mankind both past and present - agricultural research assumes ever greater importance. But, with a world so full of technical wizardry, is the simple need to produce more food as widely recognized as it should be? Stein Bie, Director General if ISNAR has his own Perspective. And if you would like to comment on this, or on any other aspect of New Agriculturist, we would be pleased to hear from you. Please email us.
