This new edition of New Agriculturist goes on line at a time when the world watches with concern the events unfolding in Indonesia and Sudan. These are two very different situations but they both bring home the inescapable fact that the farming community, if it is to prosper, needs, above everything else, a stable economic climate. We are delighted to report that interest in New Agriculturist continues to grow. One of the joys of the Internet - and this is not to suggest that it is never without its problems - is the pleasure of being able to receive Email messages from our readers. If you have any suggestions as to how we could make New Agriculturist even more reader-friendly, then let us know. This month we Focus on livestock. In a publication of this size it is, of course, impossible to cover such an important subject in depth but there are others who can provide the detail. We hope you will find the section of interest and we have given you, the reader, a chance to contribute to the Debate on livestock and the environment which will be featured in the next edition of New Agriculturist. As in the past, our thanks to all those who have contributed their expertise to Focus on in this edition. Bill Hankin, President of Heritage Seed Curators Australia, provides us with his Perspective on plant breeders rights and this theme is echoed in this edition's Debate. This is a topic that has been in the news recently and, indeed, is rarely out of it with ongoing disputes over who has the right to patent a name or a product that others feel is rightfully theirs. We hope you enjoy this edition - and thank you for getting connected! To access an earlier edition of New Agriculturist visit the back issue page.
