The Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling in Scotland, UK, is an international research and post-graduate training centre, the largest of its kind in the world. The institute grew out of the Unit of Pathobiology, which was originally established in 1971. It is an internationally recognized centre of excellence for aquaculture training, and research and development, which has pioneered research in many aspects of temperate and tropical aquaculture and contributed to the development of fish farming in many countries throughout the world. Facilities The Institute has extensive facilities including laboratories for histopathology, transmission and scanning E.M., nutrition, physiology, parasitology, virology, bacteriology, water chemistry, GIS, PCR and genetics. In addition to these specialist laboratories and lecture theatres, there are substantial facilities comprising fully networked computing services, photomicrography and photography facilities, engineering and electronics workshops and an agency-approved technical procurement service. The Institute has over 2500m2 of aquarium facilities on-site. The tropical fish husbandry building allows husbandry and disease work on warm water species such as tilapia, carp and catfishes to be carried out in controlled conditions. Substantial indoor and outdoor facilities are given over to temperate fish species and those for Macrobrachium and Penaeus are well developed. Over 400m2 of freshwater and marine aquaria within the Institute are reserved for containment disease work and the aquatic vaccine unit has specialist aquarium space. These are purpose-built suites for virology, monoclonal antibody work and for the evaluation of novel chemotherapeutic agents. The marine research facility at Machrihanish, in Kintyre, has aquaria. laboratories and accommodation for visiting staff and students and top quality sea water enables work to GLP and GCP standards in the areas of nutrition, health control and environmental impact. There are also teaching and research facilities available on the world-famous Howietoun Fish Farm at Bannockburn, Stirling. In addition, the Institute has access to facilities at the Aquatic Animal Health Research Institute, Thailand, as well as having a tropical marine prawn farming and research facility in Songkhia, Southern Thailand. Training The Institute offers training at Ph.D., MSc., Postgraduate Diploma, BSc with Honours, technical, non-graduation and short-course levels. No formal programme of studies is prescribed by the University for students studying for research degrees. The University admits students to programmes of postgraduate research in areas where appropriate supervision can be given. On admission, a student reading for a research degree is assigned a principal supervisor and an additional supervisor who arrange a course of study and research to suit the student's individual requirements and interests. The institute runs a range of general and specialist short courses, covering such subjects as aquaculture and fisheries extension, water quality, fish diseases, crustacean diseases, fish nutrition, water acidification problems, and financial management for fish farmers. Links The Institute has links with many other academic institutions including the University Pertanian Malaysia; the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, and the Tinsulanonda Fisheries College, Songhkia, and the Aquatic Animal Health Research Institute, Bangkok, Thailand; the Agricultural University of Mymensingh in Bangladesh; Tokyo University of Fisheries, Japan; the Unidad de Aquacultura y Manejo Ambiental de CIAD in Mexico, as well as a number of Institutions in Brazil. The Institute also works closely with commercial, and research and development organizations within Britain and abroad. In addition, it has its own consultancy group, Stirling Aquaculture, which has a worldwide reputation. Publications Since 1972 well over 1,200 papers from the Institute of Aquaculture have been published in scientific journals. Staff of the Institute edit a number of aquaculture journals produced by scientific publishing houses as well as being authors of several aquaculture titles.
