Welcome to the third edition of New Agriculturist. The response to our first two editions (which remain on line) has not only been rewarding for us personally but has demonstrated a desire among our readers to contribute ideas and information (See Email @). We anticipate that this interaction will continue, making New Agriculturist one of the most lively and informative sources of agricultural news and views worldwide.

As forest fires rage in Brazil and South East Asia, we Focus on agroforestry. Fire, out of control on an unprecedented scale, has caused devastation to farming families, their land and livestock, as well as to national economies and the local and global environment. Rather than trying to apportion blame for what has happened, we focus on the practical benefits that incorporating trees into the farming system can bring. We have been pleased to receive contributed articles from a number of sources and thank those who have freely given their time and effort in this way. The next edition of New Agriculturist will focus on livestock.

Turning from fire to water, Debate reviews some of the latest news and comment on this essential resource. This is the section previously known as Update. We have changed the name to avoid confusion and hope that readers will wish to participate in our Debates and contribute (short) items for future Debate subjects. 'Seed power - in whose hands' will be the subject in the next edition of New Agriculturist.

Looking for a new Perspective on insects is Hans Herren, whose enthusiasm for invertebrates is as infectious as it is well-known. With this and all our regular features, we hope that you enjoy this edition of New Agriculturist.

Interacting with New Agriculturist

You are free to print copies of the articles contained within the New Agriculturist and distribute them to those who do not have internet access.
