The University of Reading has long had a tradition of working with developing and transitional economies. In this month's Study centre we highlight some of the areas of the University of Reading's work which include tropical agriculture.

International Development Centre

The International Development Centre (IDC) is a co-operative venture of the University of Reading's departments which are active in the development field. Established in 1995, IDC's disciplines include agriculture and plant sciences, meteorology, social sciences, management, and engineering. The IDC co-ordinates and executes research into major issues of development policy, organizes a range of postgraduate and short courses in a number of development related areas, ranging from the MSc course Environment and Development, to the short course Microenterprise Finance: management and design. IDC also publishes an interdisciplinary journal (Journal of International Development) and oversees internal networking activities including the organization of a University development seminar programme.
Current areas of research include:

  • The Green Revolution in Africa
  • Finance for the rural poorest in Africa
  • African rural labour markets
  • Income distribution and poverty alleviation in transitional economies
  • Effectiveness of overseas aid.
Member Departments

Each of the member departments of the IDC also offers its own services. Currently there are 17 departments all contributing to, and working with, the IDC. Each department has its own area of emphasis and carries out research, postgraduate courses, short courses and consultancy services.

Among the departments involved are:

AERDD - Agriculture Extension and Rural Development
Applied Statistics and the Statistical Services Centre
Agriculture and Food Economics
Agriculture
CPRU - Crop Protection and Research Unit
Meteorology
School of Plant Sciences
Soil Science
VEERU - Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics Research Unit.

A list of some of the courses offered can be found in On Course, and further information is available from Helen Stutley, or by accessing Reading University.
