As befits a magazine that now has readers in 105 countries, this edition highlights opportunities and threats from the breaking down of insulating barriers and frontiers. The trend is surely unstoppable and brings many benefits, not least an awareness of what is happening elsewhere. Reaction to that awareness may result in the offer of help, or in the hasty reinstatement of barriers. To highlight the help we have News of the practical assistance being offered to the agricultural communities affected by the earthquake in the Indian State of Gujarat. And, highlighting the need for barriers, we explain the efforts being made to control the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease in Britain (Think the worst first) and in southern Africa (News). Awareness that many breeds of domestic animals are becoming extinct has led to an effort to promote better management of farm animal genetic resources throughout the world (Casualties of circumstance). If global awareness can result in such action, can an awareness of the effects of globalization on the poor also result in action to ensure they are not ignored, to become yet more impoverished? (Globalization and the Poor and our Points of View on poverty) With our Focus On seeds - multiplication, distribution and trade - and a Perspective that brings the philosophies of the East to western veterinary thinking, this edition of New Agriculturalist brings rich cultural diversity to the challenges of an increasingly interconnected global farming community.
